Air travel is fast and highly convenient. In just a few hours, you can reach countries thousands of kilometres away. However, it also comes with a lot of restrictions and limits. Some of these even affect smokeless tobacco products, such as snus and nicotine pouches. So, what rules apply to them?

Can You Bring Snus on an Airplane?

If you are wondering whether snus is allowed on a plane, the answer is yes. Currently, there are no rules or restrictions preventing you from packing it in either you checked or carry-on luggage. Which one you choose depends entirely on you. You won’t have access to your larger checked luggage during the flight. So, if you want to be sure you have snus with you, place it in a smaller handbag or backpack that you take on board.

If you want to double-check information about snus, visit the official website of the airline you are flying with. Each airline has a detailed list, where you will find not only prohibited items but also things that have certain limits. These may include liquid volumes or the power output of electronic devices (like power banks, for example).

Snus on a Plane – Can It Be Used During the Flight?

Since snus is smokeless and very discreet, you can comfortly use it on board. Just make sure you pack it in your small carry-on bag so that you can access it.

Also, pay attention to the type of snus you bring. When choosing it, follow these recommendations:

  • The best options are white or white dry portion, which have white pouches with dry content. Besides not staining your teeth, they are advantageous because they require almost no spitting, making them ideal for airplane travel.
  • Opt for smaller and more discreet varieties that are not visible under your lip and do not draw unnecessary attention. Formats like mini, slim, or super slim are perfect.
  • Always carry snus in its original containers. These usually come with a space for used pouches, ensuring you have somewhere to dispose of them.

What Are the Rules at Airports?

Smoking is strictly prohibited at airports, and this includes both traditional cigarettes and vapes. On the other hand, there are generally no restrictions on using snus. Since it does not affect people around you or produce any smoke, you can use it even while waiting for your flight.

Can You Buy Snus at Airports?

Airports typically have newsstands or smaller specialized shops where you can purchase snus and nicotine pouches. However, the selection is often limited, and the prices are much higher than in regular e-shops or stores.

If you are someone who regularly uses nicotine products, it is best no to leave it to chance and bring your own supply. Although snus is now a widely available and popular product, you might not find it in every section of the airport.

Tobacco Issues When Traveling

Snus contains several ingredients, one of the main ones beign tobacco, which can sometimes pose issues – especially in Europe.

Each European country can set its own limits on the amount of alcohol and tobacco you can bring in, but these limits cannot be lower than those established by the European Union. The current limits are:

  • 800 cigarettes,
  • 1 kg of tobacco,
  • 10 litres of spirits,
  • 20 litres of fortified wine,
  • 90 litres of wine,
  • 110 litres of beer.

Before traveling, check the limits for your destination to ensure that the amount of tobacco you are carrying does not exceed them.

Different rules apply when traveling to the USA. The U.S. government allows you to bring, tax-free, either 100 cigars, 200 cigarettes, or one roll of snus (which typically consists of 10 cans). Any products exceeding this amount will be taxed.

What About Other Tobacco Products?

Snus is not the only tobacco product available on the market. There are also nicotine pouches, vape devices, and traditional cigarettes. What are the rules for these?

Nicotine pouches

The same rules apply to nicotine pouches as for snus. You can take them on the plane and use them. In fact, tobacco-free versions are often advantageous because there are generally no restrictions on carrying them.

Cigarettes

You can pack cigarettes in your carry-on or checked luggage, but keep in mind that they contain tobacco, meaning the amount is limited. Always check how many you are allowed to bring into the country before traveling.

And remember, unlike snus, smoking cigarettes on the plane has been strictly banned for several decades.

Vape

Vapes are similar to cigarettes in many ways, but when it comes to flying, both are prohibited from being used on board. Vapes contain liquid and batteries, which is why many airlines require to be stored in carry-on luggage only.

Standalone e-liquids can be in either checked or carry-on luggage. If they are in your carry-on, make sure they do not exceed 100 ml. Always seal them properly to avoid any leaks that could damage your belongings.
